Whole body magnetic resonance imaging in children: clinical application (literature review)

Whole body MRI is a diagnostic method that allows you to get images of the entire body in a single scan session. This method is widely used in clinical practice for the diagnosis of oncological and non-oncological diseases in children. The article describes the possibilities of using the protocol in the diagnosis of malignant and benign neoplasms, neurofibromatosis, multifocal osteomyelitis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis and other pathologies.

In Russia more and more deeply premature children are being saved. However, among these newborns, the risk of brain damage caused by both immaturity and resuscitation problems is high. These pathologies require accurate and timely diagnosis. The authors conduct a comparative analysis of various imaging methods — ultrasound and MRI — to assess posthypoxic brain damage in premature infants. The study is based on the results of a survey of 80 newborns (gestational age 28-36 weeks inclusive) who received treatment at the Pediatric University Clinic.
Radiologic diagnosis of nodular neoplasms of the thyroid gland

In Russia more than 6000 cases of thyroid cancer are registered annually. 5 % of them are children and teenagers. Malignant thyroid tumors in the early stages are hidden under the mask of benign nodular diseases. To date, there is no single universally recognized comprehensive approach to the protocol of examination and treatment of children with nodular goiter. The purpose of the study was to determine the possibility of radiological diagnostics of bulky thyroid formations. 12 children aged 12-17 years with this pathology were examined. The study was performed using ultrasound diagnostics, magnetic resonance imaging and multispiral computed tomography.
Possibilities of MR-morphometry of the brain in children with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is one of the most frequent perinatal lesions of the nervous system. It is observed in 40-60% of premature babies and in 13-30% of newborns born at term. The aim of the study was to determine the diagnostic capabilities of MR-morphometry of the brain in children with HIE. The study included 93 children aged 8 months to 3 years. For all patients MR-morphometry was performed to determine the volume of various brain structures — the cerebral cortex, cerebellum, white matter, basal ganglia, thalamus, etc.

In recent decades, there has been a steady increase in neurodegenerative diseases. A characteristic feature of such pathologies is a dysfunction of the sense of smell. There are many methods for studying the olfactory tract. The article deals with the questions of odorant delivery tactics and variants of their influence on the activity of functional olfactory zones of the brain in volunteers.
